Officer who assaulted woman in car gets 1 year behind bars

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A retired Philadelphia police officer who pleaded guilty to federal deprivation of rights in a 90-minute sexual assault in his police car while on duty has been sentenced to a year in prison.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that 53-year-old Thomas O'Neill apologized Wednesday, saying he had "shamed this woman, myself, my wife, my family, my colleagues" and "besmirched the title of police officer." He also said "I want to be the moral person I was long ago."

O'Neill was a 24-year veteran of the force until his 2016 resignation. Officials said the federal charges were filed after local prosecutors declined to prosecute.

The woman's lawyer, Gregg Zeff, said she supports the deal because she won't have to testify, but will "spend the rest of her life dealing with this."
